BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari claims suspicious activity by Kashmiris in Bengal, police reject charge

Date:

BJP MLA and West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday claimed that two Kashmiris residing in Baruipur in South 24 Parganas had set up a “NanoBeam 2AC compact and high-performance wireless network bridge” on the roof of their home.

The post came days after the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam district of Jammu and Kashmir which killed 26 people, mostly tourists.

“They have installed a NanoBeam 2AC compact and high-performance wireless network bridge on the rooftop,” Adhikar said in a post on X. According to the BJP leader, the wireless network was “designed to provide an efficient and reliable solution for high-speed, long-distance wireless connectivity”.

Furthermore, Adhikari requested the Bengal Police and National Investigation Agency (NIA) to “look into it and find out whether any suspicious activity is going on”.

However, Bengal Police promptly dismissed the claim as baseless.

In an official statement, the Baruipur Police clarified that the individuals in question were not from Kashmir, but from Madhya Pradesh — one a Hindu, the other a Muslim.

Both are engineers who had rented a flat in Baruipur three weeks ago and were exploring pisciculture business opportunities in the state through a local contact, the police, adding that “There is a simple JioFiber connection in their flat, commonly used by numerous households. There is nothing suspicious about it”.

Police officials further criticised the manner in which the information was made public. “It is unfortunate that some people choose to disseminate such inaccurate and potentially inciteful information through social media, instead of informing a state or central agency,” the statement read.

“Citizens are urged to act responsibly and avoid drawing premature conclusions. Public insinuations against individuals without verifying facts can have legal consequences,” it added.

Police also reiterated that while public vigilance is welcome, social media is not the forum for unverified alerts.
